Every single cell in your body comes from a stem cell. Even stem cells come from stem cells! Come learn about these special cells, especially the ones that populate the brain. When these brain stem cells are damaged, neurodevelopmental diseases occur. I will present cutting-edge research about defects in brain stem cell division, human diseases, and potential help that stem cell therapy can provide.

Dr. Chiara Bertipaglia is a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University Medical Center. She holds a PhD in Structural and Computational Biology from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. As a graduate student she did research on how cells dispose of their rubbish. Currently she does cutting-edge research in neurobiology, studying stem cells of the brain. Outside of the lab she is involved in science outreach activities through collaborations with New York public schools. She also advocates for science and scientists’ work-life balance by serving as a board member of the professional development committee in the Columbia University Postdoctoral Society.
