Lab robotics + coloured bacteria = growing your own pixel art

Join us for the premiere of Biotech Without Border’s implementation of the BioArtBot on Friday May 12th at 7pm! This project was first developed at Counter Culture Labs in Oakland, and a gracious volunteer has adapted and deployed it at our lab in NYC. We will be showcasing our Opentrons OT2 pipetting robot as it draws your pixel art pieces! Design your own art piece online then come watch your art being printed in bacteria, or just come to socialize and watch others’ designs being printed. We will have a short presentation explaining what went into the implementation of this open source project and the colourful bacterial palette we have in the lab.

Submit your art pieces to this website and select BwoB to load the correct palette if you would like the chance to see your art being printed on May 12. (Also note that the green colour appears white under normal light and green under UV or blue light). Optionally, you can come in the following day to see your finished pieces or wait for an email with a photo of your art piece the following week.

About Our Volunteer

Sean Doyle is currently an NYU student studying computer science. He loved robotics in high school so over the past 4 months he has been working with Danny (Member & President) to get the OT2 robot within the lab up and running for members to use. Sean wants to spend his career exploring the intersection between computer science and biotechnology and he is starting an internship at Ginkgo Bioworks in May to begin this journey. In addition to being a student volunteer at the lab Sean likes to read, watch football(Go Patriots!), and explore NYC! Feel free to reach out to him with any questions about the event, robot, or any interesting Biotech events: spd7416@nyu.edu
