Engineering the Molecular Architecture of Proteins

Engineering the Molecular Architecture of Proteins

Monday, January 22, 2018
6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

A 12-hour class in Four Weeknight Sessions - January 22nd-25th, 6-9PM Proteins are the beautiful and magnificent molecular machines that keep us running, that build our body's structures, and allow us to perceive the world around us. When they go rogue, that's when a disease state happens. It has only been in the past thirty years or so that we have learned to engineer them to suit our own purposes, and to reverse damage. In this class you will learn to use 3D modeling software and public databases to visualize them. Then you will engineer a fluorescent green protein to turn a different color. You will also learn how to extract and purify the proteins you make. Instructor Dr. Ellen Jorgensen is president of Biotech Without Borders, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting science literacy and hands-on access to biotechnology. In 2009 she cofounded Genspace, named one of the World's . . . More details

CRISPR Genome Editing Workshop

CRISPR Genome Editing Workshop

Saturday, January 20, 2018
3:00 pm - 7:00 pm

CRISPR is the new genome editing technology that has disrupted the biotechnology industry. Is it really plug-and-play? Are we gods now? During the workshop you will edit the genome of yeast using CRISPR-Cas9. We'll take a look at the latest CRISPR developments, from editing human embryos to bringing back the Woolly Mammoth, and the bitter battle over patents and the Nobel Prize. Instructor Dr. Ellen Jorgensen is president of Biotech Without Borders, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting science literacy and hands-on access to biotechnology. In 2009 she cofounded Genspace, named one of the World's Top 10 Innovative Companies in Education by Fast Company. Her efforts to promote low-cost bio-innovation are featured in Nature, Science, Discover, Wired, Make, BBC News, Dan Rather, PBS News, Discovery Channel, and The NY Times. She has a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, spent many years in the biotechnology industry, and is faculty at Cooper Union. Her TED talks (Biohacking: You Can . . . Biohacking for Beginners- A Crash Course in Genetic Engineering

Monday, January 8, 2018
6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

A 12-hour class in 4 weeknight sessions: January 8th-11th - 6-9 PM Have you ever wanted to program a living cell? This is the class for you! We assume no prior knowledge of biology, and take you through the process of genetic engineering step-by-step. You will learn how DNA is extracted form one organism and loaded into another, how to cut and past DNA code using enzymes, and how to copy, analyze, and preserve DNA circuits. This is a hands-on class, so wear comfy shoes- you will be at the bench most of the time. Minimum age is 13, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. Instructor Dr. Ellen Jorgensen is president of Biotech Without Borders, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting science literacy and hands-on access to biotechnology.  In 2009 she cofounded Genspace, named one of the World's Top 10 Innovative Companies in Education by Fast Company. . . . Hacking DNA with Synthetic Biology

Hacking DNA with Synthetic Biology

Sunday, January 7, 2018
3:00 pm - 7:00 pm

A 12-hour class in 3 weekend sessions: January 7, 14 & 21st - 3-7PM What if building a new life form was as easy as Lego bricks? Synthetic biology aims to simplify genetic engineering by creating libraries of DNA 'parts' that can be hooked together to form biological circuits. This has the added benefit of making it accessible to everyone, not just scientists. DNA is your source code. But can we think of DNA as a collection of circuits and routines that keep us alive? Synthetic Biology is the science of standardizing DNA ‘parts’, much like resistors and capacitors are standardized in electronics. In this class you will learn the theory and practice of Synbio, a discipline that is enabling a new wave of biotech startups to thrive. You will learn SBOL, the visual language of synthetic biology, and how to use online registries of DNA parts to design new and . . . More details

Build Your Own Biohacker Lab

Build Your Own Biohacker Lab

Tuesday, December 26, 2017
12:00 pm - 6:00 pm

An Intensive Four-Day class December 26-29 - Noon-6PM Have you ever wanted your own lab? It’s become easier to reverse-engineer lab equipment and obtain the needed supplies. In this intensive four-day camp you will build several key pieces of key equipment to take home, including an incubator, PCR machine, centrifuge, hood and gel electrophoresis box. No prior experience necessary in biology or electronics. You will also learn how to get used equipment on eBay and professional auction sites, and where to order supplies if you have only a home address. All materials are included, and the camp is limited to ten students. Free KnowScience Talk: Stem Cells & Brain Health

Free KnowScience Talk: Stem Cells & Brain Health

Wednesday, December 13, 2017
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Every single cell in your body comes from a stem cell. Even stem cells come from stem cells! Come learn about these special cells, especially the ones that populate the brain. When these brain stem cells are damaged, neurodevelopmental diseases occur. I will present cutting-edge research about defects in brain stem cell division, human diseases, and potential help that stem cell therapy can provide. Dr. Chiara Bertipaglia is a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University Medical Center. She holds a PhD in Structural and Computational Biology from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. As a graduate student she did research on how cells dispose of their rubbish. Currently she does cutting-edge research in neurobiology, studying stem cells of the brain. Outside of the lab she is involved in science outreach activities through collaborations with New York public schools. She also advocates for science and scientists’ work-life balance by serving as a . . . More details
